Susan (Sue) McKinney, LCPC, is a Licensed Clinical Professional Counselor who has been affiliated with the Counseling and Diagnostic Center of Woodfield (CDCW) since 2005. She provides individual, family, and group therapy to children (ages 7 and up), adolescents, and adults. Her warm, collaborative style and integrative approach have supported clients across a wide range of clinical concerns and life challenges.

Ms. McKinney earned her Master of Arts in Clinical Psychology from the Illinois School of Professional Psychology (Meadows Campus) in 2000. She also holds a Primary Certificate in Rational Emotive Behavior Therapy (REBT) from the Albert Ellis Institute, which she completed in 2006.

Her clinical interests include the treatment of anxiety disorders (including OCD and school refusal), depression, stress management, parenting and family relationship challenges, life stage transitions, foster care and adoption issues, women’s issues, grief and loss, and self-acceptance. She also has a special interest in supporting teachers and education professionals navigating burnout, role stress, and work-life balance.

Ms. McKinney utilizes an empathic, goal-oriented, and evidence-based approach to therapy, drawing from Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), Exposure and Response Prevention (ERP), Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT), Positive Psychology, and Mindfulness-based practices. She is committed to helping clients build insight, resilience, and meaningful strategies for personal growth.

In addition to her work at CDCW, Ms. McKinney has served for over sixteen years as a therapist in the Adolescent Partial Hospitalization Program at a local behavioral health hospital, where she is currently the Clinical Coordinator. Her background also includes work in the fields of education and residential treatment, giving her a well-rounded perspective on child and adolescent development within family and community systems.
